Jason isn’t the brutal, callous avenger he presents to the world. But “brutal, callous avenger” isn’t just a facade, either. It’s a complex collection of symptoms.*

Jason’s body has recovered from the Joker’s many assaults, but in his mind, his heart, the wounds are just as raw as ever. What’s more, they’re right there for everyone to see, but no one notices because Jason’s symptoms are *useful,* to him as well as his allies. Jason is able to remain high-functioning because of his trauma, not in spite of it. He doesn’t hide anything— Jason’s heart is on his sleeve, all the time. But everyone, including Jason himself, sees his bloody sleeve and thinks it’s armor. That’s why Bruce and the rest of the Batfam see him and they think he’s fine.

The heartbreaking thing about “Batman and Red Hood” is that both Bruce and Jason are in the right. If Jason knows anything that could help bring Damian back he should try to find it, but the way that Bruce asked him was so shocking, so crude, so totally ignorant of Jason’s inner turmoil, that Jason was triggered almost in spite of himself.

And how does Jason react when triggered? By kicking ass, stealing a jet, and running away.

The brutal, callous, high-functioning avenger.

* Jason has a serious case of post-traumatic stress disorder, no doubt. Others have suggested he might suffer from psychotic episodes, though this could also be explained by inconsistent characterization and bad-writer-itis.

OMG this is probably Carrie or maybe Harper but I REALLY hope it’s Damian. I’m still holding out hope that Damian is alive—after all, this run of Batman, Incorporated began with a fakeout about Damian’s death, and the whole book has been interspersed with themes of life, death and resurrection. The Ouroboros is a symbol of rebirth, for example. And Grant Morrison is known for doing crazy stuff in his books. And to top it off, it’s revealed in Tomasi’s Batman and Robin books that Damian was taking acting lessons. So it’s conceivable that he’s still alive, somehow…

How 1 question triggered a "Supernatural" fandom meltdown:

The wink-wink-nod attitude of the show towards its many slash fans is not only frustrating to fans, but problematic, considering the incredibly long line of shows that utilize queerbaiting in order to build their fanbases, without any intention of ever following through. The lack of acknowledgment that queer romance could be a possibility for prime time’s most compelling relationships is a core part of the reason slash fandom exists to begin with; and while fandom has grown decidedly more mainstream since the days of Kirk/Spock, the attitude creators have towards the idea of two male characters falling in love on a show that’s already established them as straight has undergone virtually no change at all. It’s why, at a core level, so many slash fans still desperately hope and believe that their ship could become canon—most notably, Sterek fans and Destiel fans. Both Teen Wolf and SPN fans can be found frequently talking about their ships as if they are “endgame”—holding out hope that the show’s creative team will do the diverse thing and allow their presumably straight characters to be queer and in love. But as far as Supernatural goes, it seems unlikely. In addition to the show’s abysmal track record when it comes to women, the show has also never shown much respect for the enormous female population of shippers who comprise the majority of its fanbase. On episodes where SPN parodies its own fanbase, it portrays it entirely inaccurately as being mostly comprised of male geeks with a few outlying, rabid, and crazy female slash fans in the minority. The show’s own attitude of contempt towards the many slash fans in its midst catalyzes the need for slash shippers to have some acknowledgment of the Destiel pairing from the actors and creative team—and encourages the other parts of the fandom to be dismissive and contemptuous of it in their turn.

Last year one of the glass ceilings in superhero comics had a batarang thrown at it when Becky Cloonan became the first woman to draw an issue of Batman. The writing side of the Batman ceiling has had a few cracks in it through the years with Devin Grayson, Louise Simonson, Ann Nocenti and Christina Weir all having stints on Batman titles. Women writing Batman books, however, are still rare and a very small percentage of the writers in the Batman-writing world. But in July another female writer will join the ranks. Marguerite Bennet will be co-writing the Batman Annual #2 with Scott Snyder. Bennett, as she discusses below, joins James Tynion IV, who is writing Talon and Red Hood, as one of Scott Snyder’s students to pick up a gig at DC.
